BORONGAN CITY — The provincial chief of the Philippine Statistics Authority in Eastern Samar reported on the results of the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) in a virtual news conference held at the Domsowir Hotel and Restaurant in this city on August 4.

According to Mr. Ronnie A. Bajado, chief statistical specialist of PSA Eastern Samar, the province’s population is at 477,168 as of May 1, 2020, higher by 10,008 compared to the 2015 population of 467,160.

Bajado said the most densely populated municipality is Guiuan which has 304 persons per square kilometer while the most sparsely populated municipality is Maslog which has 22 persons per square kilometer.

The chief statistical specialist added that the most populous barangays are found in Borongan City which are Brgy. Songco with 4,773 population followed by Brgy. Campesao with 4,628 population and Brgy. Balud with 4,068 population.

Mr. Joselito M. Abrugar, provincial planning and development coordinator said the census aims to provide government executives, policy-makers, and planners with population and housing data on which to base their social and economic development plans, policies and programs.

In the open forum, Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan C. Agda appreciated the data as an end user though he could not hide his disappointment that the increase of population was not that significant in Borongan.

Ms. Wilma A. Perante, regional director of PSA said the population growth in Eastern Samar and other parts of provinces in Region 8 slowed down from 2015 to 2020 due to out-migration.

The 2020 CPH is a nationwide government undertaking that involves the collection, compilation, evaluation, analysis, publication, and dissemination of data on population count, demographic and socio-economic characteristics, and barangay characteristics.

Eastern Samar is composed of 597 barangays with 22 municipalities and one city.

Present during the virtual conference are Chief Executives of different municipalities, Municipal Planning and Development Officers (MPDOs), PSA Eastern Samar employees, and members of the media. (NBQ/SDC/PIA-8/Eastern Samar)
